Couples seeking a unique escape
The place has clean rooms and a nice view of the mountains from our upstairs room. I mean, I could watch the sun set over that peak every day. Plus, the owners are genuinely passionate about creating a great experience for hikers and outdoor lovers. You can feel it when you chat with them. It’s kinda refreshing, you know?
It wasn’t exactly cheap but alright for what you get.

A Wonderful Base for Sierras Adventure!
Our stay here was fantastic! The spacious double room gave us great views of Mt. Whitney. We enjoyed relaxing on the landing with wine at sunset. Don’t miss the Portal Store for hearty meals after your adventures! Pro tip, check your reservation details before arriving.

We explored the Lone Pine Film History Museum and definitely recommend the Alabama Hills Café for breakfast. The key pad entry was super convenient, and the place was really clean. Just a heads up that the front desk closes at 10 PM, so plan accordingly for late arrivals!
One thing to note, the bunk beds can be quite squeaky, so light sleepers might have a tough time getting a restful night.

Great location for outdoor adventures
I enjoyed my stay in the male dormitory. The hostel is conveniently located right by hiking spots, making it easy to hit the trails early. The ambiance was welcoming and clean, with a friendly staff that provided helpful tips for nearby hikes. Free Wi-Fi was a great bonus! One area for improvement would be the lack of a common kitchen space for guests to use.

I stayed at the Whitney Portal Hotel for one night, mainly because I planned to hike Mt. Whitney early the next day. The location couldn’t be better—right off the main road and very close to the hiking trailhead. The views of the mountains were stunning, especially at sunrise. The room I had was quite spacious and clean. It came with a flat-screen TV and good wifi, which was a nice touch. I appreciated having a clean bathroom too. However, I faced some confusion at check-in and had to sort out my reservation, which made things a bit stressful at first. The staff was friendly, but their system seemed a little inefficient. I didn’t like that they had specific check-in times and wouldn't let you in any earlier. Also, I thought the beds could use an upgrade. the double beds felt small. I didn’t mind too much since I was primarily there to sleep after a long day outdoors. Plenty of options for breakfast nearby, and I definitely recommend the Alabama Hills Café for a hearty morning meal. Overall, it was a good stay, especially for hikers, but some operational improvements would make it much smoother.

Affordable rates make it an appealing pit stop after a long hike. It's conveniently located near the base of Mt. Whitney, offering stunning views from the second floor balcony, while close proximity to various outdoor stores is great for last-minute gear needs.
Room check-in strictly at 3 PM can be a pain for early arrivals, leaving you waiting outside for a while, especially on a hot day. Lack of community spaces, kitchens, or even an extra bathroom puts this place at a disadvantage. it can feel cramped in the shared dorms. I found the metal bunk beds noisy, rattling every time someone moved, making it a challenge for light sleepers to catch a good night’s sleep. Furthermore, the dorm rooms lacked adequate storage for personal belongings, which can be a hassle when you're unpacking after a long trek.
